Interested is all. I had an account banned a while back lol.I'm guessing gluetun is involved - but you somehow still manage to get direct connections working, where as I always ended up indirect when I tried that

Utilising forwarded ports for PIA, and exposing that as <vpn_ip>:<plex_port> in reverse proxy?
funkypenguin | ElfHosted•3w ago
nothing that fancywe just use gluetun on the plex pods for any egressbut any ingress comes in via the traefik LBthe ban only affects "phone home" from plex instances to HQ, and those always originate from the plex server itself, and so are carried over the VPN

gah, messed up my edit - ADVERTISE_IP
is part of what makes it "direct" (results seem inconsistent sometimes)
iPromKnight•3w ago
Ahh thats nice 🙂Thanks manDo you block all the plex metrics endpoints etc too? (redirect them to 127.0.0.1)Didn't realise all these were here in git haha
funkypenguin | ElfHosted•3w ago
ummwhat metrics endpoints? 🙂yeah, it's all open 🙂
funkypenguin | ElfHosted•3w ago
ElfHosted is an Open (Source) Startup
This means that our business metrics, as well as our technical resources, are open for public inspection and input.

funkypenguin | ElfHosted•3w ago
oh, that metrics blocking is a good ideaespecially with their recent "share-with-your-friends" schenanigans
iPromKnight•3w ago
Seen it like this on gluetunhttps://github.com/dockserver/dockserver/blob/8d7bd27d99aed3eb1f78d488e9c44593cb3acc52/apps/addons/gluetun.yml#L14Aye cant be too careful nowOh yeah i read about all that lol
funkypenguin | ElfHosted•3w ago
nice, I'll steal that, thanks 🙂

why are we blocking metricsunless you think Plex has a giant data warehouse they're using AI to mine for information about your bedroom preferences so they can blackmail you... telemetry is what the developers use to see which stuff is broken, which stuff to cut, and which stuff needs more attention. you're only hurting yourself.not to mention, it's exponentially more expensive to store identifying information like an IP address next to your metrics than it is to aggregate them.
funkypenguin | ElfHosted•3w ago
that... is a good point
root•3w ago
It always floors me when people are like "why can't we have good software on linux" but the first thing they do when they install software is open the preferences and uncheck the "Send anonymous metrics to the developers to help with software development" box.
iPromKnight•3w ago
well i only suggest it because they collect this as part of the metrics
root•3w ago
that data won't be tied to any of the other data.
iPromKnight•3w ago
Yes but is it the ip of the server, or the ip of the client watching? They dont say
root•3w ago
server.
iPromKnight•3w ago
Im not bothered about mine being stored - im always on endpoint, but the server is on hetzner which is prohibited by plexhence - why i suggested to block
root•3w ago
hetzner bans plex or plex bans hetzner
iPromKnight•3w ago
plex bans hetznerhttps://linustechtips.com/topic/1531520-plex-blocks-ip-addresses-from-hetzner-as-of-october-12-2023/Like 9 months ago
root•3w ago
that is crazy lol
iPromKnight•3w ago
So safer to block in this case as we cannot guarantee whats being collected definitively without packet inspectionAye yeah lolJust a ridiculous decision by them really - literally only hetzner too
root•3w ago
they must have been threatened with papers
iPromKnight•3w ago
Aye I think so - there is a massive anti-piracy movement in Germany isn't there
root•3w ago
more generally a massive censorship movement across all of europe(and canada, and to some extent, the US)
iPromKnight•3w ago
aye true that
root•3w ago
not in au/nz though. bloody dolphins just say anything they want and nobody even pays any attention.
iPromKnight•3w ago
Hahaha - aye NZ seems really good for that tbhLook at KimDotCom - he setup all of mega out there hurled up in his mansion didnt heI'd probably move myself if I could a) convince the missus, move the kids out of school etc, and b) wasn't a severe arachnaphobic lol

nz has its own problems but protecting the right to speech isn't one of them. then again, that's "for now" because the people are docile and could find themselves in a tyrannical government any day.
iPromKnight•3w ago
aye 100%It'll stay that way as long as its profitable for "the man".As soon as something uncomfortable comes up, thats when the political games will start
root•3w ago
i'm in texas. i have a house with a fence around it. i can pretty much ignore the political games and know my local government will back me up on making sure they stay outside my fence.also, we can probably beat nz at cricket with a full-time engineer from Oracle on our team.
funkypenguin | ElfHosted•3w ago
we only have teeny weeny spiders in NZ. All the big monsters are on the west island (Australia)
iPromKnight•3w ago
How teeny we talking?I saw the movie arachnophobia when I was like 7 or something and to this day 33 years later I still check my shoes every time I go to put them on 😄

White-tailed spider
White-tailed spiders are spiders native to southern and eastern Australia, and so named because of the whitish tips at the end of their abdomens. The body size is up to 18 mm, with a leg-span of 28 mm. Common species are Lampona cylindrata and Lampona murina. Both these species have been introduced into New Zealand.White-tailed spiders are vag...
