Tesla's major 2025 Spring Release software update is rolling out, and it finally brings the long awaited adaptive high beams feature to its vehicles with matrix headlights in the US.
The rest of the world has long enjoyed the feature, as have owners of the new Model Y and Model 3, but Tesla is now lighting up adaptive headlights for the legacy Model Y that still constitutes the majority of its vehicles on the road.
How does one tell if their Model Y has matrix headlights? Simple, once the Spring Update hits their vehicle, the option will appear underControls > Lights > Adaptive Headlights, and can be switched on at will.
For the Model 3 Tesla explains that "when traffic is approaching and the high beam headlights are on, individual pixels of the high beam headlights dim to reduce glare."
"Likewise, when the low beam headlights are on, and you are driving on a highway, the headlights adjust to illuminate more of the road," it continues, but adds that "the headlights also adjust to curves on the road ahead to provide greater visibility at night."
For the legacy Model Y, however, and other vehicles with matrix headlights in the US, it simply states that"by detecting other road users, and selectively dimming individual pixels of the headlight, your high beams stay on more often for greater visibility at night," mentioning nothing of the adaptive cornering, so it remains to be seen if that is packaged in, or will arrive at a later date with a subsequent update.
All new Tesla Spring Update 2025 features
There are plenty of other new features besides adaptive headlights for the US and Canada that come with Tesla's Spring Release software update, too:
- Save Trunk Height Based on Location for the Model Y or 3/S/X which can remember not to open the trunk door fully when in a garage. One simply has to open the trunk lid to the desired height, then hold the close button until they hear a chime.
- Blind Spot Camera on Driver Screen for the Model S/X refresh: the feed is now available on the instrument panel via Controls > Display > Automatic Blind Spot Camera > Driver Screen.
- Dashcam Update and Side Camera Recording on most Model Y/S/X/3 vehicles: the B-Pillar camera footage will be added to the Dashcam and Sentry feeds for a total of six camera views. TheDashcam Viewer app gets a grid view and easy switch to next video for faster previews.
- Alternative Trip Plans: Choose between Fastest, Best Amenities, or Fewer Stops for charging. "Also, when viewing a charger location page, nearby restaurants, cafés, and shops within walking distance are displayed at the bottom," tips Tesla.
- Cybertruck gets Comfort Drive Mode when Autopilot is engaged and Lane Departure Avoidance with a blue indicator. Its frunk lid height can also be saved based on location now.
- New Controls > Navigation > Avoid Highways option just in case.
- Keep Accessory Power On: the cigarette lighter outlets, USB ports, and inductive chargers will stay powered when there is nobody in the vehicle, including in Sentry Mode, as long as the battery charge is above 20%. This way, owners can run mini fridges or leave their gear to charge overnight in the car.
- Media search results are now filtered by sources, providing faster and more streamlined access to content.
- You can now shuffle an entire Apple Music playlist that contains more than 100 songs.
- Easily scroll through your SiriusXM favorites by tapping the steering wheel button left or right.
- Sign in with your Amazon Music Free account.
- See what song will play next on YouTube Music playlists in the Up Next view of the media player.
- If hotspot is enabled, it will automatically connect to your vehicle once you start driving, so you wonât have to reconnect each time.
While the big two feature updates in the 2025 Tesla Spring Release are the adaptive high beams and powered outlets, remembering the trunk lid opening height based on the location of the Model Y is a surprise entry of a long requested option.
