My thoughts on the state of Helluva Boss - Only (2024)

The show moving away from the assassination element;

This is something I see discussed a lot, and I feel both sides of this argument bring up fair points.

There are a lot of people who don't like that this show was originally introduced as demons from Hell being contracted to kill humans, yet that's something that rarely happens. Especially in Season 2.

Yet episodes that do focus on IMP's assassinations tend to reviewed the most poorly, and if there was an assassination every episode, the show would be repetitive.

Murder Family and C.H.E.R.U.B. are mostly looked at as forgettable episodes while Unhappy Campers is almost universally agreed to be the worst episode of the show.

I saw people discuss how this could be fixed going forwards, and one thing that was brought up was the targets potentially having more depth, or the missions aren't so contrived.

The concept of heaven and hell battling over a man's soul could've worked if Lyle Lipton was more morally grey instead of a greedy scumbag who belonged in hell.

Unhappy Campers could've worked if Moxxie and Millie actually did look for their client's murderer instead of spotting him right away, and Moxxie acting like an asshole who was creepily determined to have pre-teen girls like him.

My thoughts on the state of Helluva Boss - Only (1)

Overall, I don't mind the more seriously and dramatic moments in the show and seeing more of Hell, but I don't blame people who initially thought they were getting a wacky black comedy about assassins being put off by this.

Too many villains?

I think this is a fair criticism. In terms of major recurring villains we have The Cherubs, Striker, Stella, DHORK, Crimson, Andrealphus, and Mammon, along with a possessor villain being introduced in Ghostf*ckers.

Obviously while we don't know if that possessor will be a recurring villain just yet, we still have seven villains/villain groups that have not been defeated yet.

Viv said last year that Helluva Boss is meant to be a four season story. We're more than half-way through Season 2, and there's still a bunch of threats at large. Hopefullytowards the end of Season 2 or in Season 3, we'll start seeing bodies drop.

Stolas and Stella;

If you haven't heard at this point, Stolas was originally meant to be a villain. He would give IMP more dangerous assignments and Blitzo would try to find a way to get out from under him, with the two of them eventually developing legitimate feelings for each other.

It would've been interesting to see Stolas as a villain, but I'm really not sure if I would have this much sympathy for him over "sad, gay Owl" Stolas.

I don't have an issue with Stella being a villain, nor to I think there needs to be an explanation. There are plenty of people in real-life who are scumbags and they don't have sad, tragic backstories.

The truth is, some people are just awful.

Not to mention, the vast majority of people who wish Stella had more depth are her apologists, who are psychotic man-children/women-children.

Stolitz;

This has been the central focus of the entire season so far, and a lot of people are tired of it.

We keep getting this back and forward over whether or not Blitzo even likes Stolas, acting no different than Stella at times, such as calling him names and yelling in his face.

The reason why the opening scene of Apology Tour was so satisfying to me is we finally get to see Stolas fire back at Blitzo and call him out over generalizing all royals/goetias, as well as his behavior in general.

People also like to forget the whole reason their transaction started in the first place is because Blitzo broke into Stolas' home and stole from him. He's not an innocent victim in this scenario.

The way Blitzo Apologists brush that off, you'd think Stolas was Valentino or something.

However, there are some, especially on Twitter, who refuse to acknowledge that their current dynamic is very toxic and love to accuse people who don't like this ship of being hom*ophobic with no real proof. Sure, there are weirdos who ship Stolas and Stella, completely ignoring how much of a c*nt Stella is, but that's a weird vocal minority.

Blitzo;

I've gone from having a neutral opinion, to hating him, to thinking he was improving, and now I'm back to hating him.

A lot of this has to do with Apology Tour really hammering in how much of an asshole he's been to so many people who didn't deserve to be treated like that.

People try to bring up his trauma as an excuse, but, Vaggie has trauma. She doesn't use that as an excuse to act like a bitch to everyone.

The protagonists of IMP's Chick Magnet, Broken Assassin, and Human in Hell have trauma. They don't use that as excuses to be assholes.

Blitzo just expects everyone to be ok with his behavior because of his past and because they're in Hell, even though both shows in the Hellaverse have throughly debunked the "everyone in Hell is awful" argument. He even says he thinks "sorries" are for puss*es and people don't deserve them.

As Verosika put it "awwww, poor Blitzo. Finally having to own that his actions affect other peoples' fee fees".
